Pink hues of flamingos, flocks of cranes taking off, mighty eagles waiting for the meal of the day, pelicans with their large beaks swimming gracefully with the much smaller ducks, harriers flying gracefully over the grasslands, herds of Wild Asses running in the vast desert, and foxes scuttling away with food for their playful kids. Welcome to India’s Western-most wilderness – Rann of Kutch.
Join Darter Photography this December on “Wild Wild West – Wildlife Photography Tour of Kutch”. The various habitats of Little and Greater Rann of Kutch offer almost endless opportunities to watch and photograph wildlife.
Start date: 24th December, 2011 (Saturday) morning at Ahmedabad
End Date: 1st January, 2012 (Sunday) morning at Bhuj
Little Rann of Kutch and Greater Rann of Kutch offer ample bird photography opportunities. We’ll cover a diverse variety of habitats, including grasslands, scrub, agricultural fields, water bodies, coasts and the open Rann looking for species of mammals and birds that live in different habitats.
Little Rann of Kutch hosts India’s largest wildlife sanctuary, the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary – the last home of the Indian Wild Ass. Herds of this beautiful sandy coated animal can be seen foraging in the grasslands and roaming around in the empty Rann. Blackbucks and Nilgai are other common herbivores in the Rann. Desert Foxes, Indian Foxes and Jackals are often encountered on drives early in the morning and late in the evenings, as are Jungle Cats and Desert Cats. On a lucky day, one might also see the elusive Indian Wolf or, who knows, a Caracal too!

As many as 400 species of birds have been recorded in from these two key regions. These include the many species of birds migrating from Europe and Central Asia make this beautiful place their home during the winter months. The lakes dotting the borders of the Rann host many species of water birds (Ducks, Geese, Grebes, Pelicans) and waders (Sandpipers, Snipes, Egrets), in addition to Flamingos and Cranes. Huge groups of larks and the lonely wheatears are also common in the Rann. Many species of warblers, including the bright-eyed Desert Warbler and the vividly contrasting shades of the Orphean Warbler, can be seen in the scrub.
In a land of such abundance of prey, eagles, harriers and falcons are also encountered often. You might also come across the wide-eyed expression of Short-eared Owls in the scrub. Flocks of Common and Demoiselle Cranes fill the sky at dawn and dusk. Even the visibly arid deserts of the Rann are home to the rare Greater Hoopoe-lark.
We’ll also try to photograph the rarities of this region, including Sociable Lapwing, Macqueen’s Bustard, Pallid Scops-Owl, Merlin, Desert Courser, Stoliczka’s Bushchat, White-naped Tit, Marshall’s Iora, Greater Hoopoe-lark, Eurasian Oystercatcher and Crab Plover.
