Destinations – Places Around Delhi -Weekend Drives and Getaways

If there is one thing I am jealous about people living in Delhi, it is about the huge number of places around the city worth travelling to. Delhi has a variety of weekend getaways to choose from. Travelling in one direction you can see snowy peaks while on another side is a desert. The city is also close to several national parks, beautiful rivers and historical locations. Here is a list of places around Delhi, ideal for a weekend drive. The list is too small compared to what Delhi can offer a traveller. Most travel-crazy people living in Delhi would have already been to all these places, but this offers a good choice of destinations to those who are visiting Delhi and have a weekend to spare.

Rishikesh. Rishikesh is a quiet town where River Ganga flows out of the foothills and enters the Gangetic Plains. It is a pilgrimage place as well as an adventure destination.

Haridwar. Not faraway from Rishikesh is one of the holiest places of pilgrimage. Haridwar is known for its Ganga Aarti on the banks of the river, attended by thousands of people every evening.

Shimla and around. Shimla is perhaps every Delhiites weekend destination in the summer months. Pleasant weather, some beautiful hills, tall deodar trees characterize the summer months in the hills of Shimla, while winter brings in some beautiful snow in the slopes.

mashobra
Agra. Not much needs to be said about the fame of Taj Mahal. Agra can be a quick day-trip from Delhi if you would like to see the Taj.

taj mahal
Jaipur. The city of Rajput Kings showcases its majestic palaces and forts to travellers.

jaipur
Shekhawati. Often called the “world’s largest open air gallery,” the region of Shekhawati is full of beautiful Havelis with their walls painted from end to end.

Corbett National Park. Corbett is not just a place to see tigers, it also has some of the most beautiful landscapes in India.

Images: Gopalaswamy Betta

Gopalaswamy Betta is a hill bordering Bandipur National Park. It is known for a temple built by the Chola Kings and later maintained by Wodeyar rulers of Mysore. Today, besides being a place of pilgrimage, it also sees many tourists coming to Badndipur National Park who drive up here to see a neverending stretch of of the forest from a high vantage point. It is not just humans who pay visit to the hill; elephants are frequently seen wandering atop in search of lush grass. Tiger sightings are also reported occasionally. While sighting wildlife has an element of luck involved, you can surely see a green carpet on the rolling hill during the monsoon and the winter months.
