There are many places close to Bangalore and Mysore along the banks of Kaveri that make perfect spot for a day trip or pleasent picnic. I am writing a series of posts in the next few days to cover each of these places one at a time, starting with Muthathi.

Muthathi is probably the nearest place from Bangalore on the banks of the river. It is a small village, near which the river runs shallow and wide. Road to Muthathi runs parallel to the river and makes a pleasent drive. While you are there, you can dip into the waters and enjoy the feel of the running water. The good thing about the place is that it does not get very crowded in the weekends(At least yet!) and even if it does, there is enough open space that you can always find some nice and empty area near the bank for yourself.
Other than loitering by the river, the approach to the village is a nice drive through dry deciduos forests where you might spot wildlife if you are lucky. One of the specialities of this region is the highly endemic grizzled giant squirrel which are rare and hardly seen.

Muthathi Information
The best thing about Mutathi is that it is just 90 minute drive once you leave the town. Drive on the Kanakapura road through Kanakapura and Sathanur. Turn left at Satanur and drive for another 30 minutes to reach Muthathi. You drive through the hills and wilderness of Cauvery wildlife sanctuary and get good views of the river. There is no accomodation available in Muthathi village but nearby Bheemeshwari has a resort run by Jungle Lodges and Resorts. Advance booking is necessary. Pack your food before you leave the town since there are no restaurants available. Nearby places that can be visited include the Bheemeshwai Jungle Lodge which is famous for angling activities. It is known as one of the best places to catch Masheer fish. Also close by are Mekedatu, Chunchi falls and Kaveri Sangama where river Arkavati meets Kaveri.

great information…. thanks a lot… plan to bike/trek to muthathi sometime in the near future…
Well written & nice information. Thanks man.. Im planning to go this week end.
Thanks dude. I was searching for a weekend retreat to a forest with a river running through it. Looks like Muthathi is the perfect match.
Visited this place. Didn’t find it interesting. Couldn’t find the wild life but did see some wild monkeys snatching the belongings. Not worth driving for 3 hours just to see unclean bank of the river.
u should’ve crossed the river at muthatti.. there is a lagoon- like place where river is calm and cool.. u need to take a boat from muthati village.. its awesome..
Your blog was helpful. We visited the place, but avoided the crowds near Muttathi village river bank.
The forest enroute is lovely, difficult to believe such a place exists so close to Bangalore.

Hi, interesting blog. I am planning to go to Muthatahi soon. I had a few queries about the place and I hope you would answer my queries at the erliest:
1. How to reach Muthathi fro kanakapure? Is there any sign board near satanur to take a turn towards Muthathi?
2. Just two of ue are going. So is the place safe? Is there any place to park our bike? Can we take our bike into the forest?
3. How far is the village from the river?
I hope you would reply soon. I would be grateful to you.
Thanks

arun – regarding ur query on “any photography club which ….”, check out flickr.com and look for photos of Bylakuppe…contact the ppl whose name u see there…they have a small gang woh goes on photo tours…i was once invited to one of these photo tours, but could not go with them…but u cud sure try it out…
I had been to this place – Muthathi twice and the place is too good to hang out for a day and a half or two. The best thing would be staying at Kaveri Fishing Camp at Gilmore – the accomodation and food are arranged by Jungle Lodges and resorts and the booking should be done in one month prior. Best time would be Oct – Dec. Camp Fire Camps are arranged on request basis. Better to go in groups of 15 – 20.Not much of wild animals except Deer,Elephants,Big Squirrels & Lotz of birds.
Do visit to the place.
Must Carry – A good Digital Camera or Handy Cam, Pull Over,Trekkeing Gear and any other accessories. It is just 98 kms away from Bangalore. Best way to reach there is by bike or car. I would suggest go by bike. Take Kanakapura Road from Bangalore. After reaching Kanankapura 28 kms from there need to take deviation on the left. Not to worry about the roads, how to reach cause it is a NH now and you have sign boards each kilometer.
Have a nice trip and enjoy.
hey. this is anu here. how is muthati a place to go mid november? is water safe to be around with? how are the roads? and great blog!
keep it going!
I came to know that the water in Muthati is not safe. Although it looks calm and safe but there are many whirlpools, some of them just few meters from the bank, that have drowned many experienced swimmers. So please be careful.
great information..can we go and play in water?
How to reach Muthathi from Bannargatta?
Hmm…very nice info
Guys,
It’s really dangerous to venture into the water at this place.
Hi Readers,
I myself have visited this place a couple of times. The ambience is great. I dint see much wildlife except for monkeys and street dogs. The villagers claimed that there were leopards. The banks were littered with glass pieces so keep your footwear on always. DO NOT VENTURE IN TO THE WATER, ITS INFESTED WITH WHIRLPOOLS. Check out on google regarding this.
Planning to go again with my family and dogs and get those ****ing monkeys this time.
Ciao
Amrit
how to reach der from mysore
from mysore, you can take the Malavalli road towards Bangalore. There is a right turn somewhere before Kanakapura to reach Muthathi. Can’t recall the name of the place.
